🎨Art Curriculum Intent

At Holy Cross and All Saints RC Primary School our Art curriculum is designed to inspire, engage, and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent, and create their own works of art. We believe that every child is an artist and that creativity is a vital part of personal development and self-expression.

Our intent is to:

  • Foster Creativity and Confidence: Encourage children to explore their imagination and express themselves through a variety of artistic media and techniques.
  • Build Skills and Knowledge: Develop pupils’ understanding of colour, form, texture, and pattern, while introducing them to the work of diverse artists, designers, and craftspeople.
  • Celebrate Cultural Diversity: Promote appreciation of art from different cultures and time periods, helping children understand the role of art in society and history.
  • Support Emotional Wellbeing: Provide a safe and nurturing space where children can reflect, take creative risks, and build resilience through artistic exploration.
  • Encourage Critical Thinking: Teach children to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art and design, fostering thoughtful discussion and reflection.

Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, children progress from mark-making and experimentation in EYFS to more refined techniques and conceptual thinking by Year 6. Our aim is for every child to leave primary school with a deep appreciation of art, a strong foundation of skills, and the confidence to continue their creative journey.

In addition to our weekly art lessons, we regularly come together as a school community on a chosen theme incorporating artwork that the children complete at home as well as individual, group and whole-class projects.
