Religious Education Curriculum Intent

At our Catholic primary school, Religious Education (RE) is at the heart of our curriculum, shaping the spiritual, moral, and cultural development of every child. Rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church and guided by the Lighting the Path programme from Oxford University Press (R-Y2) and Come and See (Y3-Y6) our intent is to nurture a deep and living relationship with God, foster religious literacy, and inspire children to live out Gospel values in their daily lives.

Our Intentions Are:

• To illuminate faith: Using Lighting the Path, we aim to help children explore the mystery of God’s love revealed through Jesus Christ, encouraging awe, wonder, and reverence in every lesson.

• To build religious literacy: We provide a coherent and progressive RE curriculum that enables children to understand Scripture, Church teachings, and Catholic traditions, while developing critical thinking and reflection.

• To celebrate Catholic identity: Our curriculum supports children in understanding their place within the Catholic community, participating in liturgical life, prayer, and sacramental preparation.

• To promote inclusivity and dialogue: While rooted in Catholic doctrine, our RE curriculum also fosters respect for other faiths and worldviews, encouraging children to engage in meaningful dialogue and appreciate diversity.

• To support holistic development: We believe RE contributes to the formation of the whole child—spiritually, morally, socially, and emotionally—preparing them to be compassionate, responsible citizens.

Lighting the Path (Reception - Year 6)

Developed in alignment with the new Religious Education Directory (To Know You More Clearly), Lighting the Path offers a rich, engaging, and age-appropriate framework that supports teachers in delivering high-quality RE. It integrates Scripture, doctrine, and lived faith experiences, ensuring that children encounter RE not just as a subject, but as a journey of discovery and transformation.
