Supporting Behaviour and Wellbeing

Salford City Academy > Information > Mental Health and Wellbeing

At Holy Cross and All Saints RC Primary School we are very proud of our Emotionally Friendly School Status.

This recognition reflects our deep commitment to supporting the emotional wellbeing of every child, staff member, and family in our school community. Being an Emotionally Friendly School means we’ve created an environment where feelings are understood, voices are heard, and mental health is nurtured with care and intention.

Here’s what this means for your child:

  • 🧠 Emotional Literacy: We help children understand and express their feelings in healthy, constructive ways.

  • 🤝 Positive Relationships: We foster kindness, empathy, and respect in every classroom.

  • 🛠️ Supportive Strategies: Staff are trained to identify emotional needs early and respond with thoughtful, evidence-based approaches.

  • 🏫 Whole-School Culture: Wellbeing is woven into everything we do—from our curriculum to our playground.

We know that emotional wellbeing is the foundation for learning, confidence, and resilience. This accreditation is not just a badge, it’s a promise to continue putting your child’s emotional development at the heart of our school. We are building a school where every child feels safe, valued, and ready to thrive.

OUR EMOTIONALLY FRIENDLY SCHOOL CHAMPIONS

Our Behaviour Policy

Our Whole School Golden Rules

At Holy Cross and All Saints RC Primary School we aim to:

  • provide a safe, calm and caring atmosphere for learning to take place.
  • support every child’s emotional wellbeing
  • ensure consistency, fairness and clear expectations.
  • ensure that pupils are listened to and treated with equal respect.
  • support caring and co-operative behaviour and to support children in regulating their emotions / behaviour
  • understand that all behaviour is communication
  • ensure commitment to the policy from all members of the school community.

Our school behaviour support policy has been developed in line with our Emotionally Friendly School approach and aims to support the emotional wellbeing of all pupils, enabling them to manage their emotions and behaviour.

At Holy Cross and All Saints, we believe that it is very important to celebrate those special proud moments. When children are noticed to be going above and beyond our school Golden Rules, their teacher will celebrate this with the class by moving their name into the proud cloud and awarding the child with 10 Housepoints.

A proud post will also be sent home via Google Classroom & Instagram to share each child's proud moment with parents / carers.

Our Wellbeing Policy

At Holy Cross and All Saints, we are committed to supporting the emotional wellbeing of our pupils and staff by fostering an environment which promotes positive emotional wellbeing. We recognise how important emotional wellbeing is to our lives in just the same way as physical health.

Our role in school is to ensure that children are able to understand and talk about their emotions as well as manage times of change and stress effectively. This policy outlines the approaches and strategies we use within our school to develop emotional literacy and support both pupils and staff wellbeing. Here at Holy Cross and All Saints, we have a supportive and caring ethos and our approach is respectful and kind, where each individual and contribution is valued.

EMOTION COACHING

Emotion Coaching is an approach that we use across our school to support children with their own emotions, building strategies and resilience to help them manage their emotions. Emotion Coaching is based on the principle that nurturing and emotionally supportive relationships provide optimal contexts for the promotion of children's outcomes and resilience.

Emotion Coached children and young people:

  • Achieve more academically in school
  • Are more popular
  • Have fewer behavioural problems
  • Have fewer infectious illnesses
  • Are more emotionally stable
  • Are more resilient

(Gottman 1997)

Balls of Emotion

At Holy Cross and All Saints Primary, we use an approach based around the 'Balls of Emotions'. The 'Balls of Emotions' are colourful, child friendly images used to represent each emotion, encouraging children to talk about and express their emotions.

The children understand that their feelings can be big or small balls of emotions which they can manage using different strategies.

We encourage the children to think of emotions as visitors that come and go. Some are comfortable and some are uncomfortable but we learn different strategies to help us manage them all. No matter how big or small, all emotions are important.
