Geography

'The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents and, in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.'
Barack Obama
🌍Geography Curriculum Intent

At Holy Cross and All Saints RC Primary School, our Geography curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and deepen pupils’ understanding of the world around them. We aim to nurture inquisitive minds that explore the relationships between people, places, and environments—locally, nationally, and globally.

Our intent is to:

  • Develop Locational Knowledge: Help children build a strong sense of place by learning about their local area, the UK, and the wider world.

  • Promote Global Awareness: Encourage pupils to appreciate cultural diversity, environmental challenges, and the interconnectedness of communities across the globe.

  • Foster Fieldwork Skills: Provide opportunities for hands-on exploration through map work, observation, and data collection—both in the classroom and outdoors.

  • Build Geographical Vocabulary: Equip children with the language and concepts needed to describe physical and human features of the world confidently.

  • Inspire Environmental Responsibility: Cultivate a sense of stewardship by exploring sustainability, climate change, and the impact of human activity on our planet.

Through engaging topics such as rivers, weather, continents, and settlements, children learn to ask questions, interpret evidence, and make informed decisions. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure progression in knowledge and skills, empowering pupils to become thoughtful, informed global citizens
