Design and Technology

"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Design is
knowing which ones to keep."

🛠️ Design & Technology Curriculum Intent

At Holy Cross and All Saints RC Primary School, Design and Technology is a dynamic and practical subject that encourages children to become creative thinkers, problem-solvers, and confident makers. We aim to provide a curriculum that is inspiring, inclusive, and rooted in real-world relevance.

Our intent is to;

Empower Creativity and Imagination

  • Enable pupils to design and make purposeful products that solve real and relevant problems.

  • Encourage originality and innovation through exploration of materials, tools, and techniques.

Develop Technical and Practical Expertise

  • Teach children how to safely and effectively use a range of tools and equipment.

  • Build competence in working with textiles, construction materials, mechanisms, and food.

Promote Iterative Design Thinking

  • Embed the design-make-evaluate cycle to help pupils refine ideas and improve outcomes.

  • Foster resilience and reflection by encouraging children to test, adapt, and improve their work.

Connect Learning Across the Curriculum

  • Link D&T to maths, science, computing, and art to deepen understanding and broaden application.

  • Use cross-curricular projects to reinforce key concepts and enhance engagement.

Celebrate Diversity and Sustainability

  • Explore global design traditions and inclusive approaches to problem-solving.

  • Encourage sustainable thinking by considering materials, waste, and environmental impact.

Prepare Pupils for a Technological Future

  • Introduce digital tools and programmable components where appropriate.

  • Inspire future designers, engineers, and innovators by showcasing real-world applications.
